Selecting a Mentor
A Day in the Life
If you find yourself struggling with your studies and your mentor is so inclined, get
him or her to review an accurate to-the-minute log of your daily schedule for a week and
share it with them. Prior to this, tell them what you are having trouble with or concerned
about. Then perhaps they could shed some light as to why you are having problems
and how to overcome them after they see you in action or prevent problems in the first
place.
Selecting a Mentor
Do They Need Their Advice to Be Followed
You may want to avoid “mentors” that become angry with you if you do not follow
their advice. That is not a healthy mentor-mentee relationship. A good mentor will help
you through a situation anyway. Some may even have a back-up plan if you didn’t
follow their advice and something negative resulted from not heeding the message.
Selecting a Mentor
Yes, Get More Than One Mentor
A mentor-mentee relationship is not an exclusive one. I have more than one
mentor. And my mentors have more than just me as a mentee. In turn, I now have
more than one mentee. There has never been a situation where their “loyalties” have
been divided nor have mine been to my mentees. I urge you to get more than one
mentor. It is beneficial to get more than one perspective.
