Networking Receptions
Thoughts on Alcoholic
Beverages
As to the question of whether to partake in alcoholic beverages provided at
networking receptions, there are 2 schools of thought: (1) One school of thought is just
what Judge Dixon stated in the interview above. You haven’t made it yet, so don’t.
(2) The other school of thought: Yes, partake as the host paid for the beverages.
Other people want to see if you can work and have fun. No one wants to work with
a “stick-in-the-mud”.
If you’re going to partake in an alcoholic beverage, have far less than you’d
normally have. Do not allow yourself to get “sloppy”. Perhaps refrain from ordering
alcoholic beverages with soda as the carbonation may make you feel the effects
faster.
Middle of the road approach: Get something that looks like an alcoholic
beverage. Ask bartenders at networking receptions for non-alcoholic beverages
that look like alcoholic beverages. One example is a cranberry juice with seltzer
water with a lime garnish which looks like a “cranberry and vodka” or “Cape
Codder”.
