Overlooked Forms of Networking
Volunteering
Volunteer to help organize a job fair, convention, conference, gala, or other such
networking event. Rotary clubs are also a good resource. Volunteering at such events
puts you in a better position to get your name out there and hand out your resume
(where appropriate, like at a job fair) or business card. Firm representatives at job fairs
or other representatives and invited guests may see you a little differently from the rest
of the pack in that you’re there to make them more comfortable and see to it that things
go smoothly. It doesn’t immediately appear like you want something from them and
they are more likely to want to establish more of a connection with you because of that.
Not only that but you are seen as more of a leader or self-starter, qualities invaluable to
any job, firm, organization, or business.

Specific Activities in the Legal Field
To further distinguish yourself, there are several activities that you should at least
familiarize yourself with or become more proficient in your knowledge of these activities.
Legal professionals may network over drinks - so perhaps wine tasting and becoming
more knowledgeable about wines and spirits is something you may want to look into.
Perhaps learn how to play cards or take up golf. Try learning about cigars. Learn the
appropriate terminology. Learn what‘s offered in your area - what are the most popular
or prestigious places in which to practice that activity or network in your area. To that
end, check the internet (like on www.meetup.com) or even your state’s cable network
news channel.
