Overlooked Forms of Networking
Problems thinking on my
feet/shyness/public speaking problems
To overcome feelings that you cannot think quickly on your feet in a networking
setting, shyness, or problems with public speaking, join and participate in your local
Toastmasters club (please see the following website for details:
https://www.toastmasters.org/). Toastmasters prepares members by having them make
different kinds of speeches (starting with an introductory one, humorous, etc.).
Chapters also give vocabulary words in which they encourage members to use during
their speeches. There is usually one member that volunteers to count the number of
filler words in one’s speech (i.e., how many “um’s”, “like”, “uh’s”, etc.). There are also
leadership opportunities. Meetings are typically once a week and could be held in a
library, office, or school. The environment is warm, friendly, and supportive as the goal
is to make everyone a better speaker and professional.
While I have never had the opportunity myself, a friend and recent graduate of
my law school recommended signing up for an in-person “Acting for Lawyers” course,
particularly if interested in litigation, or attending an improv class.
