When playing “table host”, it is important not to be presumptuous before making
introductions, so once you introduce yourself to a person, don't assume that they and
the rest of the individuals are strangers to each other. Say “it’s nice to meet you, Ms.
Smith, do you know Mr. Doe?” If they do know each other, ask how by suggesting
something and let them acknowledge or correct it. “Oh. Did you meet at a reception
like this one?” or “Did you two attend the same school?” The answer will be something
like “No, we met at the Women in Law Convention back in 2015” or “Yes, we both went
to such and such college and we had history together”. It’s not that you’re just being
nosy, but it invites further discussion. You could use their response as a springboard. It
also provides you with some background information about the person.
